“The tens are removed” is an incomplete explanation of Spanish 21. Readers can reasonably interpret it as removing every card worth ten, which would describe a very different game. The distinction between a printed rank and a scoring value resolves the confusion.
What the official rules remove
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission’s Spanish 21 rules dated 28 March 2025 specify six or eight 48-card decks. Each deck has the numbered ten of every suit removed. Jacks, queens and kings remain, each worth ten; aces can count as one or eleven. The regulator also requires the removal to be checked during the card inspection. This is the source ruleset for the following illustration, not a claim that every table uses identical optional rules.
A composition calculation, not a forecast
In one complete 48-card deck, twelve cards still have a value of ten: four jacks, four queens and four kings. The initial proportion is therefore 12/48, or 25%. In a complete conventional 52-card deck, sixteen cards have that value, giving 16/52, approximately 30.77%. Using several identical complete decks leaves those starting proportions unchanged.
Those percentages are our arithmetic for an untouched composition. They are not a probability promised at every later point in a shoe. Once cards have been removed, the numerator and denominator both depend on what remains. Nor is the proportion of ten-value cards the same quantity as the probability of winning a hand.
What an explainer should not conclude
A casino influencer can use a deck diagram to show the four missing ranks and the twelve picture cards that remain. That is clearer than saying the game has “no tens” while the next shot shows a king worth ten.
The comparison does not calculate the game’s house edge, recommend a decision or establish that a variant is better or worse overall. That would require its complete settlement, doubling, splitting and bonus rules, plus an appropriate mathematical model. Deck composition is one input, not a verdict. A trustworthy explanation stops where its calculation stops rather than turning a correct fraction into an unsupported earnings claim.
