The number of possible roulette outcomes is not a timetable for their appearance. A simple coverage calculation explains why many numbers can remain unseen after 37 spins.
Model note: the calculations below assume independent, equally likely outcomes on a conventional single-zero wheel. New Jersey’s equipment rules, section 13:69E-1.7, specify its 37 pockets. The mathematics is our worked illustration, not a test of any particular table.
One pocket can remain absent
For a named pocket, the probability of not appearing in one spin is 36/37. Across 37 independent spins it is (36/37)^37, approximately 36.3%. Calling the pocket “missing” describes the record; it does not identify a fault or an obligation for the next result.
Count distinct numbers, not just spins
Each of the 37 pockets has the same absence probability. Adding their expected absence indicators gives 37 × (36/37)^37, approximately 13.4 unseen pockets after 37 spins. Equivalently, the expected number of distinct pockets observed is about 23.6. These fractional values are averages across hypothetical samples: an actual results board contains an integer number of different results.
The expectation does not say every sample will leave precisely 13 or 14 numbers unseen. Nor does it say which ones they will be. Repeated results consume observations without increasing the distinct-number count; that is why matching the sample size to the number of pockets does not complete the collection.
A checklist for coverage graphics
A useful graphic labels both the number of spins and the number of distinct outcomes. It keeps zero in the set, distinguishes a continuous sample from a compilation, and does not reset the start point merely to make the coverage look unusual. If results come from different wheel types, the 37-pocket calculation is no longer the stated model.
This is a way to interpret data, not a reason to select the unseen numbers. Under the assumptions, every pocket still has probability 1/37 on the following spin, whether it appeared earlier or not.
This is educational analysis, not a recommendation to gamble. A casino influencer explaining these figures should retain the assumptions and complete sample, rather than present a calculation as a winning system. See more Roulette explainers. Source checked 29 October 2026.
